HONR 201: Global Citizenship Essay
Before the Introduction to Honors class, I was unsure of what it meant to be a global citizen. Taking the Introduction to Honors course allowed me to see and understand global citizenship in a new way. Being a global citizen is to realize that on a personal level, you are a member of a culture. To be a true global citizen, however, is to explore experiences and information that is outside of your culture, and to place yourself in the shoes of another person to understand new cultural perspectives. The initial experiences I developed in college during my freshman and sophomore years, allowed me to begin to understand other cultures based on studying Spanish and coursework from specific classes. Continuing to study Spanish provided me with a comprehension of contrasting verbal and written comprehension of another culture. This essay represents my initial understanding of what it means to be a global citizen, setting goals and ideas that will allow me to expand my work in this competency.
